The vertical installation of Agri-PV projects is emerging as a promising solution to energize traditional industries, and boost economic returns while driving demand for PV technology. Heterojunction (HJT) solar modules, known for their high efficiency and reliability, are gaining wider preference for vertical PV projects.
At the pv magazine Roundtables Europe 2024, Christian Comes, Director of Business Development Europe at Huasun Energy, shared insights into the integration of HJT solar modules in vertical installations. He highlighted several benefits of Agri-PV blending traditional agriculture with photovoltaics, including higher crop yields, extra income for farmers, optimized land use, and increased PV installation demand – all aligning with the EU’s renewable energy targets.
Comes emphasized that optimizing economics of vertical PV systems depends on reducing installation costs and maximizing revenue of power generation. HJT modules, with their superior efficiency, low degradation rate, and high reliability, can significantly reduce labour costs and operational costs. Coupled with advancements like low-temperature processing and 0BB technology, HJT products play a pivotal role for the PV systems in reducing Balance of System (BOS) costs, making them particularly competitive in high-BOS-cost markets like Europe and North America.
Vertical PV systems also offer high-value electricity during peak demand hours by aligning power generation with electricity spot price fluctuations. Furthermore, The superior low-light performance and excellent temperature coefficient of HJT modules enhance their overall energy production.
As part of the presentation, Comes showcased a case study on a vertical installation solution in Blankenfelde, Germany, with an AC installed capacity of 96.8 MWA. The findings revealed that Huasun 720 W HJT modules outperformed equivalent TOPCon modules in the first year, achieving a 7.91% increase in operating hours, saving 10 hectares of land, and reducing BOS costs by 1.92%. As a result, the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) was reduced by 8.72%, and the Internal Rate of Return (IRR) showed further improvement of 3.76%.
Through its partnership with Next2Sun, Huasun is driving the application of innovative bifacial HJT solar solutions, with one of the key projects being the 5.2 MW vertical Agri-PV farm in Merzig-Wellingen, Germany. This collaboration highlights Huasun's commitment to advancing solar technology, ensuring top-tier product quality, and delivering exceptional customer service in the renewable energy sector.
Recent government policies across Europe have paved the way for the growth and promotion of Agri-PV projects. As the global leader in HJT technology, Huasun is dedicated to enhancing the efficiency of its HJT modules while expanding their diverse applications. With a focus on sustainable development, Huasun aims to support global agriculture by providing more efficient, reliable, and clean energy solutions.
